Christina Moneo

Rooted in informal art, abstract expressionism, the art of primitive cultures, and oriental art, Christina Moneo’s dramatic paintings call to mind the work of the 1950s action painter, Franz Kline. Her art explores the energy of the gesture with loose brushwork, which not only suggests the movement of the body, but also an expression of the inner spirit. Abstract as it appears, Christina’s work also conveys something about her essence as an individual artist.

She studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country and lives in the northwestern Spanish region of Asturias. Christina’s work is underpinned by her practice of the ancient Chinese martial art, Thai Chi. The repeated, exacting pattern of movement in Thai Chi deeply influences the gestural quality of her work, where the brush becomes an extension of the artist’s arm or her entire body.

Christina has exhibited in galleries across Spain and in 2014 and 2015, she was appointed curator of the project Gráfica Andando. The National Library of Madrid and the Diputación de Valladolid have copies of her work.
